"The decisive factor for this was the result of a survey, which showed that around 20 percent of respondents would miss the smell of gasoline the most if they switched to an electric vehicle. It was also the case, he said, that 70 percent of respondents expressed that they would miss the smell of gasoline at least to some degree. The perception of gasoline was almost on par with the smell of new books in the popularity scale."(elektroauto-news)
"Ford saw that people might miss the typical smell of combustion engines in the all-electric car. A survey commissioned by Ford would have then shown that one in five drivers would miss the smell of gasoline the most when switching to an electric car, with about 70 percent of respondents saying they would miss it at least "to some degree." According to the survey, the smell of gasoline was ahead of the smells of wine, cheese and new books in popularity." (heise.de)
"Their starting point was to study the chemicals emitted by car interiors, engines and gasoline. These included benzaldehyde, an almond-like scent emitted by car interiors, and paracresol, which is responsible for the rubbery scent of tires. They were joined by ingredients such as blue ginger, lavender, geranium and sandalwood, which added metallic, smoky and rubbery accents. Animal scent elements were also added to emphasize the heritage of the Ford Mustang and give the impression of horses." (elektroauto-news)
"The starting point in developing Mach-Eau, he said, was to recreate olfactory elements of a typical gasoline-powered vehicle, including from benzaldehyde emitted in vehicle interiors and paracresol, a substance found in car tires. Along with other scent elements, it was refined and flavored with the horse scent component." (heise.de)
"Characteristics
Benzaldehyde is harmful to health, although a real health hazard is usually only to be expected with comparatively large ingested quantities. It smells pleasantly sweet like marzipan. The taste of benzaldehyde is generally perceived as characteristically marzipan-like, but in its pure state also as unpleasantly burning. In high dilution, especially with ethanol, a wild cherry note is increasingly added to the aroma. Benzaldehyde also belongs to the aromas in wine. With an odor threshold of 3 milligrams/l in white wine, it is an important component of the wine bouquet. Benzaldehyde has a flash point of 64 °C and an ignition temperature of 190 °C....
Safety
Benzaldehyde was included in the Community Rolling Action Plan (CoRAP) in 2016 by the EU under Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) as part of the substance evaluation. Here, the effects of the substance on human health or the environment are re-evaluated and, if necessary, follow-up measures are initiated. The reasons for the inclusion of benzaldehyde were concerns about consumer use, worker exposure and widespread use, as well as the potential risk from mutagenic properties. The re-evaluation is to be carried out by France from 2020 onwards...
For a 70 kg human, the lethal dose is estimated at 50 mL. An acceptable daily intake of 15 mg/day has been identified for benzaldehyde by the United States Environmental Protection Agency." (wikipedia)
